He doesn’t want out lol but don't read too much into the 8 year deal either. Any player that can guarantee himself that kind of security takes it. No other team but the oilers could pay him for the next 7 years. So signing 8 years at 20 years old means nothing. By stamkos being days away from UFA ans signing 8 years means he truly wants to be there. Again, before the leafs conspiracy is thrown at me, i'm NOT SAYING HE WANTS OUT! Lol.

Can a team trade a portion of a player's cap hit in the case of Bobby Ryan and keep the player or would Ottawa have to trade Ryan and then reaquire him and have the team keep say 20% of his salary?

I think they would have to trade Ryan to and then back but I'm not sure
I had a different but related control. If your retain 20% do you actually have to pay the money or is it just paperwork against the cap. Like could Ottawa retain 20% and pay 0 dollars.
