I was just thinking of changes Edmonton can make and in a year they will definitely be in serious contention with even small changes.

2016 off-season
Edmonton trades Ference, Lander, Pitlick and a 1st or 2nd to Toronto for Phaneuf

Edmonton trades Fayne to Arizona for a 3rd rdpick

Edmonton trades Korpikoski to Carolina for a pick

Edmonton signs Loui Eriksson, Abdelkader, Cam Ward and Cam Talbot. Both 1 year 3.5 mil

Edmonton lineup
Hall McDavid. Eberle
Pouliot. RNH. Yakupov
Abdelkader. Draisatl. Eriksson
Hendriks. Letestu. Pitlick

Phaneuf. Schultz

Definitely a playoff team. And would definitely fit under the salary cap! I think a realistic secenario. Not too many changes but enough

Phaneuf trade is ridiculous. And awful. For both teams.
Trade Fayne? Why?!
Signing Abdelkater? I wish. Won't happen. Eriksson is highly unlikely and unnecessary. Ward could be an idea, but probably wouldn't come that cheap so it's also unlikely.
The only thing that makes any sense is the Korpikoski trade and I'd only back at if he flounders this season.

Not an oilers fan but I'm glad you're not their GM. I like what Ciarelli's doing better. Edmonton doesn't need to rush into being contenders. Their whole core is getting better.

I hate to burst your bubble but the red wings will re-sign and keep Abdelklader. He is our most physical player and you need that in this league to be competitive. So Detroit won't let him go unless we get someone better. Which isn't likely.

Based on your trades:
Leafs would want more for Phaneuf.
Fayne may not be worth a 3rd, maybe 4th-5th
Why does Carolina need Korpikopski?

You can't expect 4 of the top free agents to come to Edmonton when they have always had a tough time attracting free agents. Abdelkader and Eriksson could be given more money, and top-six forward jobs elsewhere

not a playoff team in the west, not even close, really. defence is still horrible, only 2 top 4 guys, unproven (talbot) and regressing (ward) goaltending, the forwards are playoff quality though.
