Edmonton doesn't have the cap space unless Ottawa retained 50% of Pageau's cap hit.

And even then, a 1st rounder and a prospect is a lot for a guy that doesn't really move the needle that much for Edmonton in hopes of making playoffs.

No go. Edmonton cannot give up a 1st for a half year rental. 2nd rounder is rental rate. Pagy's salary has to go back to Ottawa somehow in the trade as well Gagner / Manning and bottom 6'er plus a 2nd is about the best Ottawa can hope for out of the Capped out Oilers for this rental player.

Pageau would be unreal for Edm as a 3C. And would instantly improve the team. But if Holland was hesitant to include a 1st or one of their top 3 D prospects then o certainly don’t think he would ant to include the 1st in a trade for Pageau.
I’ve wanted Pageau for 3C since game 5 of this season tho.

West is best rentals do get 1sts, look at Hartman and Brassard 3 years ago, Duchene the past 2 years, hall this year etc. If pageau can't get a 1st and a possible decent prospect with or without contract then he stays put in Ottawa.
