According to some source (forgot the source, someone remind me, lol), Burke, Treliving and an assistant GM of the Flames were at the Leafs game. The source says they were looking at Leafs goalie Bernier.

If I could, I'd look at this deal being done:

To Toronto: Ladislav Smid/Derryk Engelland, Jonas Hiller
To Calgary: Jonathan Bernier, 5th Round Pick

then flip either one of Smid/Engelland to Hawks for Bickell.

In essence, Hawks free up cap; Flames get a goalie to TRY and help their mess; and Leafs get a PF in Bickell and something of a backup in Hiller.

Twitter. This was all over it last night. It was assumed they were there to look at Bernier, but nothing conclusive to suggest that. Shouldn't be huge news but it involved Brian Burke and, for some reason, people still ohh and aww when he does anything. Apparently being arrogant and liking "truculence" makes you a king. Never understood it.

Anyhoo, sorry about the tangent. The deal you outline isn't too bad, including the flip to the Hawks. Smid is kinda pricey tho, isn't he? For his occasional usage? I honestly can't remember his cap hit, but might require some retention even with taking on Bickell. Cap space is hella valuable to the Hawks this year.

It doesn't really matter where they are in the league if they can climb to top three in the division there playoff bound and two spots are up for grabs.

Of course it doesn't matter where they are in the league in terms of the playoffs with this new horrible format, and that wasnt my point. my point being that they are in fact tied with a few others for 6th last in the league. at approximately the 30 game mark of the season it is no longer a fluke or bad run, so they are obviously a mess when what was expected of them before the season is taken into consideration. the only thing saving them is the stupid format and the fact that everyone else in their division, aside from LA, is doing just as poorly.

bud hillers contract expires at the end of the year so it would go off the books and Bernier has one more year so that's the positive in a trade like this. I don't believe leafs would want bickell at all.
