Calgary trades:
Mikeal Backlund

Seattle trades:
2021 3rd round pick
and takes Milan Lucic in the expansion draft


Maybe Calgary needs to retain some salary or maybe it needs to be Monahan instead of Backlund.

Thoughts?

I would do it. Re sign Ryan, or let Dube center the 3rd line. What to do with all the extra cap space is the real question.

That'd put Calgary around 23-24 mil in total cap space.

Trade Zary and the 12th overall for Reinhart if he can come to a prearranged agreement with the Flames to resign with them. Say 5 or 6 years at around 7 mil/ yr.

Sign Zack Hyman for around 5x5 or 4x5.5. If he wants much more than that in either term or salary forget it.

That'd leave another 11-12 mil for a good backup goalie, another decent player in the 4-5 mil/ yr range and to fill a few holes in the bottom 6 with value contracts and/ or kids from Stockton.

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Hyman - Backlund/ Monahan - Reinhart

Hyman and Tkachuk could swap spots if Hyman (a right shot) can play RW as well as he plays LW. If so the 2nd line might be better deployed like this too:

Monahan - Reinhart - Hyman

I've often wondered if Monahan might not be better at LW than at center. He's more of a goal scorer than a playmaker anyhow.

Ruzicka should be ready to center the 4th line now or maybe Zary will impress in camp enough to get a chance. I think Ryan will sign with Seattle but Dube is an option. Who knows maybe Dube is another Bennett being misused plugging holes on his off wing and bouncing all around the lineup instead of being given a chance to settle in at center. There's always Gawdin too, he should be able to handle 4th line center but doesn't have the upside the others do.

You can't use Zary as a player you fill next season as you trade him to the sabers for Sam reinhart.
