Paul Martin is better then Phaneuf?
Really?
I bet if Phaneuf was on Pit and Martin on Tor I would see people post the Leafs would not only not retain Salary but include a 1st Round Pick in that deal.
People if you hate the Leafs that's ok but don't undervalue there Team

I think it would be more of cap move, that's why they would retain. Not saying it's like this in reality. Saw it in some trade offer below.

If they would trade Phaneuf they wouldn't retain any salary at all. Phaneuf is signed 'til 20-21 season.

If I had to take one of the two,I'd take Martin over Phaneuf, and I'm not a fan of either team.

Martin-257 pts in 642 games. Career +86 and has 38 points in 80 playoff games, being a plus 1 in playoff career

Phaneif-381 points in 701 games . Career plus 13 and is a minus 18 with 15 points in 32 playoff games.

Those stats don't tell me Phaneuf is better, especially when Phaneuf gets 2 million more a year

your post makes me laugh you can't compare the stats straight up martin has been on a much better team where he has been playing with much better defence partners. Phanuef was playing with gunnarsson for years and he is now a second or third pairing def on the blues. Now his partner is Franson who is not strong in his own end. Martin has been helped by playing with a more responsible forward group and has been placed in a top four that is much better than Toronto's.

Listen to any experts about Phanuef and they will say he is a good dman he just needs some help and needs to not play as many minutes. If Phanuef had more help on the back end he would be a lot better

Martin can skate around with a carton of eggs all game and not break any, zero fights in almost 700 games, geez man, at least Dion plays a hard game, mistake ridden, but he plays, tries and is all in. Martin is as gentle as they come.

1st of all, take a look at the teams Martin has played for (NJD & PIT) compared to the teams Phaneuf has played for (CAL & TOR).

2nd of all, your argument over points is weak as Phaneuf's average (.54ppg) is better than Martin's average (.40ppg) in the regular season and almost identical for the playoffs

Martin's stats like +- Look inflated due to that fact that he has played on some very good teams. While Phaneuf has been given no support. One player doesn't make a team.
