Here's a proposal for two teams whose needs complement what each other has to offer:

NYI: Mayfield

EDM: Barrie, Puljujarvi, 2nd & 3rd

WHY IT WORKS FOR NYI:

- leverage Trade Deadline Cap Space instead of trading futures for help now.

- helps with their playoff drive this year, while adding futures. (With Ovi out they have a real shot to overtake WSH for the final wildcard.)

- add a much-needed puck-mover on the back end to feed their offense & run their power play.

- acquire extra picks in a deep draft to help get a little more "future & youth" in their system.

- create a sizeable twosome in Puljujarvi teaming up with Nelson...possibly finding a tangible use for JP. (Size like that makes a big difference at playoff time.)

- leaves 569K in deadline Cap Space for Lou to work with if needed.

WHY IT WORKS FOR EDM:

- EDM frees an additional 1.37M of deadline cap space for a total of 3.345M at the trade deadline.

- adds some much needed size & nasty on their back end with UFA Mayfield.

- EDM is looking for a D, and gets one without having to retain salary.

- EDM frees up 1 extra roster space for deadline additions.

- EDM creates space & adds a D without having to trade their '23 1st, Broberg, or any of their other prized prospects.

@Chickenfoot
At first glance, I wondered if Barrie is what Lou would be looking for, but like you indicated, his D isn’t exactly setting the world on fire, and their typical 2nd pp unit utilizes all forwards.
The optics are bad for the Oilers (all that for 5th/ 6th d-man? ), but it does address their particular cap and roster needs. Bouchard could step up to first unit pp, Broberg could try out on 2nd.
One caveat, Oilers do have somewhat similar player already in Deharnais.
Overall, not bad.

Don’t see how Mayfield is worth more than Barrie. But I do agree Barrie would be a really good fit in New York.

My concern is the islanders cap space. You're taking back like 7m.

HRENKLIN: the cap values are prorated at the trade deadline.

A full season is 185 days. The Trade Deadline values are based in 42 days worth of their full season salary, or 22.7%.

Thus, a player with a salary of 5M only requires 1.135M, or 567,500K with 50% salary retention?.
