*Canucks retain 50% of Garland's remaining 3 years of his contract.

This is both a tweak type of trade that imo make both teams better without weakening either team.
Leafs add the 1st to compensate both Garland's retain as well as WNylander being on an expiring contract as Boeser has 2 years left on his contract.
Cap wise it's basically a wash for both teams.

Nylander won’t be traded. He will be a key rental for the leafs this year. He’s leading their team in points. To suggest he is moved is idiotic and not worth speculating.

I’ve said it a million times: the leafs need help in net and on D. You trade what you have excess upside of (scoring) for what you have need for.

It’s hardly an original thought, and the leafs are more than a “tweak” from getting themselves sorted for the playoffs.

Besides Samsonov what Goaltending problems do The Leafs have?
Woll, Jones, Hildeby in The AHL.
There isn't an issue in net in the big picture, Woll will be back in January and he has shown to be the real deal plus Jones is a solid backup.
The problem is to rid Toronto of Samsonov imo.

- the leafs are currently 23rd in a 32 team league in goaltending stats.

- it is widely known the leafs are capped out with problems to address on D & in net, so I’m not exactly breaking any news here.

- I guarantee you that Treliving’s priorities are a Goalie & Defensemen in that order. (Again, this is hardly news, and time will prove this to be correct) .
