If EDM gets the 1st overall pick it will be very interesting what they do with it.

They are literally the only team who would be in a position to trade it. Infact, I think they need to trade it, adding McDavid or Eichel does not make them a better team. they will finish last place again if they don't make some big changes and fill holes.

They need a good experienced defenceman who can play 25 minutes a night, Ovbiously a goalie who can play 60+ games and have a .920%, they still need a first rounder in 2015, and they need a top young forward.

Also for anyone who does not think Babcock will be the next head coach of the leafs, you need to check yourself and learn to connect the F****** dots.

Babcock won't go to the leafs until the leafs deal with the problems higher up in the organization. shanahan needs to take control and get nonis out of there. Babcock needs to have something to work with. If he wanted a work project he would just stay in Detroit.

Your proposal depends heavily on where Toronto's 1st round pick is. If it's top 5 (which seems unlikely) then it's likely very close.

If it is out of the top 5, then you have to up the ante.

"if" the oilers get the 1st pick and "if" they were to trade it they would get a way better package from other teams. if your serious about trading for the first pick the oilers don't want a phaneuf and his contract and reimer is ok but it would be more like reilly, nylander jvr or kadri and a 1st. not sure Toronto would pay that

Crowse, Roy, Rantanan, Merkley, Werenski, Barzal, Anderson, Sprong, Bittner and White all also look pretty decent

How much cap space does Edmonton have and do they want to waste it on Phaneuf( who's worth half or even less than he's making now) and Reimer, he's a backup goalie and Edmonton arguably already has 2.
If Edmonton is going to trade thier 1st they will have to clear space on thier roster to get players that would actually help.

Lets be real even the leaf play badly they are still not in the top give worst team in the league so at most they would be in 5-10 with that said phaneuf is not going to be involve if there a trade its going to be nylander, rielly, van rymsdike and reimer plus leaf 1 rounder

half would be 3.5 mil, on the open market #4-5 defensemen get that now. If you seriously think phaneuf is a #4-5 dman I don't know what to say.

sure phaneuf isn't worth 7, right now he's worth 5-6, but in the coming years, as salaries increase, phaneuf will be "worth" the 7 mil he makes. that is assuming he performs at the level he is now, but considering he's only 29 his play shouldn't start to decline for 4 years at least since he does seem to keep himself in good shape.

phaneufs play declined since before he left calgary, I would be happy with him at 4.5, maybe 5 if the cap goes up, which its not gauranteed to do

Phaneuf is worth around 5M now. Later in his contract, he might be worth 6M, if the cap still raises.

That is the main point. Dion is and always been a pretty good d man BUT for what he makes I think we can better at a bargain prices. But if he is traded don't think for a second he can't bring back something good. All u people are just leafs hatets

I'm not a leaf hater , it's just that this trade proposal sucks. McDavid is ccomparable to Crosby at this stage in his career and the players assembled aren't even close.

@stickboi, I agree with your premiss that trading the 1st makes sense for Edmonton, but not for the selected assets, starting with Reimer. Both Fasth and Scrivens were much better before they played for EDM, what indication is there that Reimer will not follow the same pattern. I would think TML would need to trade Kadri, Franson, Phaneuf, Nylander and 2-1st round picks to get the 1st overall. That leaves TML top line intact with McDavid probably having enough talent to make and average player look like an all star (a la Crosby and Thornton). Look what Quebec got for Lindros, and McDavid is projected to be even better. Unfortunately, TML do not have an exceptionally talented prospect pool and may not want to trade that many roster players, so they may be the wrong trading partner.
