Given the way Vrbata's playing this season and the fact Hamhuis is hurt, neither is worth a 1st and neither player is really worth it for the Caps.

I've said it before here, Vrbata and Hamhuis are not worth 1st rounders.

There's a few players that are over 30 that might be: Marleau, Thornton etc. But those guys have longer contracts and have better production over their careers.

The return for Vrbata would be like a B level prospect a roster player and a mid round pick. Hamhuis might be a prospect and a 2nd round pick depending on how desperate the teams are.

Only one player had a return of a 1st round pick last year on deadline day when there is the most scrambling, Braydon Coburn, who was a top 4 defenceman with very solid career statistics and only aged 29. Hamhuis is 4 years older than Coburn was and has faded all season long. (Sekera, Yandle, Perron etc. were all before the deadline and either had better upside, were younger or had term) .

Players that didn't get 1st rounders that probably have more value than Vrbata/ Hamhuis:
Jeff Petry
Curtis Glencross
Erik Cole
Zbynek Michalek
Chris Stewart

Tl;Dr Hamhuis and Vrbata are not worth 1st rounders, or late 1 st rounders. Because of age and dips in production they are good roster players that can have an impact on a team in the playoffs but as 32+ year old UFAs they aren't going to bring a big return. Sorry Vancouver fans but better players didn't get 1st rounders last year and these guys won't this year.

Also no team in the league wants to see another team have 3 first round selections, that's a well known fact.
