Just a thought that came to mind.

Toronto: Jimmy Howard

Detroit: Dion Phaneuf

Obviously there may be pieces going back either way but Detroit showed serious interest last season for Dion.

Howard, although being a legit number 1, has been edged out by Mrazek and has taken a back seat in DET.

Contract wise, Howard is 5.3M against the cap until 2018-19 whereas Phaneuf is 7M against the cap until 2021.

This saves Toronto 2 years and 1.7M in space per year.

This allows Detroit to strengthen their shaky blue line with a player who has seemingly had success under the Detroit system.

On the other hand, this creates flexibility for the Leafs to move out Bernier and Reimer while solidifying a position of need that they haven't had since Belfour.

Could this work? both seem to be untradebale right now and its a move that addresses both teams needs.

No from the Leafs, hate all you want Reimer-Sparks is fine and Phaneuf is having his best season in his career.

what the H? red Wings do NOT need or want Phaneuf anymore, they went and got Green instead. And aren't Leafs fans over the moon about Reimer? Why would you want Howard?
Detriot says no way.

I can't see DET letting Howard rot away playing 25 games per year until his contract expires. By sitting his value is diminishing day by day but he is still a quality goaltender nonetheless. Phaneufs value has gone up (albeit slightly, but still gone up) to the point where it probably wouldn't be that far off value wise. Sure, DET got Green but he hasn't done anything really in the first 25 games. And after Kronwall and Green, DET has virtually nothing great on D. Some prospects are coming up and playing but no legitimate solid top 3 defenseman on that team.

And by the way, not a reimer fan. Never have been. Sparks is too early to judge, but I don't predict anything more than a decent back-up.

And read the 2nd line. pieces going back and forth to even out the trade. I was just coming up with a base for a trade.

Well the base for the trade isn't realistic in any way. Det has zero interest in Phaneuf anymore, they have Green now instead and no body wants that contract. No matter how you try to spin it, Detriot laughs at this base trade.

Howard lost his job because of his average play. Leafs have enough average goaltending, and not at 5.4 per.
