Born close to the Detroit area,he could play for his 'hometown' team. MacT is a real nice guy, if he asks to whom Petry wants to go to. Most likely Petry will say Detroit. Detroit, themselves in need of a defenseman like Petry. And the Oilers, get a good return and lose some salary.

For those who argue that 3rd round pick is too much:
Petry has 1 year on his deal which might be perfect for him. If Detroit waits for free agency EDM might resign him and other teams might offer him a better contract.
He can be clutch for his team and play better since he is from the area.

Petry for a 3rd round pick is a joke. You don't get top4 puck moving d-men for mid round picks. These are the most valued commodities in hockey.

Petry had 17 pts last season, not much of a puck mover, Oils lucky to get a 3rd for him
