I have heard from a reliable inside source that the Oilers and Leafs have a Deal in place if Ekblad is Drafted before there Pick at 3 comes up, the Deal is this.

I guess Edmonton feels Phaneuf is that important to Edmonton.

Oilers will give the leafs a 4th round pick for phaneuf only if the leafs retain 25 % of his contract that's the only way the oil will take him if not keep your 7 year 7 million dollar D man lol

If Ashton is go good, then why do all leafs fans want to trade him away? The guy will have trouble keeping an NHL job with the "right way" that he plays (in other words: badly). You can go ahead and make personal attacks on me, I don't care, it doesn't change the fact that Ashton makes a trade proposal worth less rather than improve it.

Why does everyone say Phaneuf has a garbage contract. D-men are a valuable commodity, he is a 2/3 D who is in the prime of his career with lots of years left to play. Phaneuf played his best years out west, it could happen again. Also, having a player like Phaneuf already in a long term contract is a positive to not have to go through bidding wars and over paying. Yes 7mil a year is over paying but there are worse contracts (Clarkson). Although, I do agree, Toronto seems like they would need to give up more.

In my opinion this trade would be a step back for the leafs. One of their biggest problem areas is defense and trading Phaneuf in my opinion will make their back end problem much worse. Yes they might get the centre that they need but I worry that a trade like this will result in the leafs being in a lottery situation for years to come because they wouldn't have the defense needed to get out on their own end (aside from Rielly and maybe 2 other defense on their current roster). This deal if true would be a one step forward and two steps back type of deal.

Given that the leafs will in all likelihood see Reimer get signed elsewhere (or at the very least want to get out of TO asap) if they make this trade then I think the leafs will be in a lottery pick situation for the next few years because aside from guys like Reilly the teams overall defensive play is problematic to say the least. With only one goalie that could be in a number one situation (when Reimer leaves) the leafs will not be anywhere close to a playoff team in my opinion for a couple of years.

Phaneufs contract may look bad this year but in 3yrs a 31 year old 24minute dman with ability to put up 40 pts will be getting 8-9 mil so the back half of the contract will be great

Princess will be an anchor for years to come unless TO does one of two things;
1. Gives up way more than they get (to minimize that ridiculous contract).
2. Absorbs (retains) some of that ridiculous contract when trading him.
