I'm not sure if either team would do this but how about

JVR & Carrick for Hamonic & Kulemin?

NY clears some more cap to possibly bring in Duchene as well. Even without Duchene, NY would have a top line of Tavares, Eberle & JVR. They may lose JVR to free agency the following season which is why the leafs take a cap dump and add Carrick. The leafs get an upgrade on RD and Kulemin only has one year left as well. I don't know if Hamonic would want to go to TO, I remember he had some list a while back. Fair or no?

oh come on, hamonic isn't good enough to open up more holes in the team, you lose carrick opening up a hole on D and you're also losing JVR.

2.) 23 Jun 2017 11:30:05
I'm a leaf fan BigZ, trying not to over value players. Most people think JVR can't get Hamonic alone, especially with Hamonic's cap friendly contract and JVR only having one year left. I thought Hamonic would be a big upgrade over Carrick defensively, which is what they need. I really like JVR but scoring goals is not a problem for the leafs. I was going to put Marincin instead of Carrick but I didn't think that would fly.

I really don't know the value of a couple of these players but I think Montreal should be in on Duchene.

Duchene for Gallagher, Beaulieu & McCarron?

Serg needs to be part of the trade or don't bother posting duchene trades.

2.) 11 Jun 2017 04:32:12
Not even close to what Colorado wants bud.

3.) 11 Jun 2017 04:32:27
Every montreal fan would rather give up Chucky over Gally. That's a fact. He had a down year but he's someone you can't replace on the ice nor in the dressing room.

4.) 11 Jun 2017 04:18:13
I'd do that from mtl if Col acept.

5.) 11 Jun 2017 19:04:40
Coming from hand fan I think that 2018 1st, 2018 nd, juulsen and Charles Hudson/ Nathan beaulieu would be fair.

JVR for Manson? The leafs biggest need is defense. From what I saw this playoffs, I like his physical play and defensive awareness. I'd rather not give up one of their top rookies to acquire Vaatanen or Lindholm.
Sign C.Franson. He wants to be back in TO, was great on the PP and hits the net with almost every shot.
Fair???

Where's Tommy? I'd like to know if that Leafs/Carolina deal is still on the table? I know you have reliable sources and you said by July 5th the deal will be done. Bozak, JVR & a 1st for Hanifin & Lindholm. Get it done!

I'd cry. I'd actually cry I'd worship Lou Lamerello every morning.

2.) 05 Jul 2017 16:26:28
Ahahahaha.

3.) 05 Jul 2017 23:21:51
C'mon Tommy, please chime in. I already bought my Hanifin jersey. Are you the same guy that had M. Staal coming to the leafs a couple years ago?

02 Jul 2017 22:53:02
Marleau a leaf, I guess JVR will be gone soon. I don't know about 3 years at Marleau's age but he doesn't seem to slow down. I hope that doesn't effect the signing of all the kids but I'm sure they thought of that.

1.) 02 Jul 2017 23:08:02
3 may be to much. i think 2 woulda been good. but, overall think he will do good on Leafs.

2.) 02 Jul 2017 23:14:31
Wouldn't it have made more sense to just try and sign jvr to an extension. I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted much more if any then they just gave marleau. I mean he is younger and better.

3.) 03 Jul 2017 00:54:51
When I first saw the Leafs signed Marleau I was feeling ok about it. Then I saw it was 3 years for a 37-year-old, and I felt much less fine about it. Then I saw it was for over 6 mil a year and literally said "what the (you know the rest) " in the gym. Good thing the music was loud enough for no one to hear me stupidly talking to my phone.

Seriously though, I thought the Leafs weren't doing stupid stuff like this any more. Why are they planning on paying a 40 year old Marleau 6.25 when basically every one of the current forward group except Kadri will be due for sizeable raises within the next two years. Oh well, I guess there's something about the Leafs that always results in stupid signings, regardless of who's running the team.

4.) 03 Jul 2017 01:52:30
Ouch. I jus seen the term. not the dollars.

5.) 03 Jul 2017 01:54:56
3rd year might be bad but when you think about it Horton and Lupul will be gone. Marner, Nylander and Mathews will be RFA's and you can always trade to make space also the cap will rise. Not bad. Better then Clarckson/ Lupul signings.

6.) 03 Jul 2017 02:05:40
@Shank

Literally the same way I thought. The only 'consolation' is that the deal is frontloaded. 8 to 6 to 4.

7.) 03 Jul 2017 04:28:32
The front loaded contract definitely helps. Hab I believe Marleau is JVR's replacement when they get a good defenseman for him. He's the best trade bait they have without losing any kids.

8.) 03 Jul 2017 05:50:11
Just seems a little off to me. I would have much rather just kept jvr. And looked elsewhere for a dman. trade a couple draft picks or something. at least they wouldn't be over the cap.

9.) 03 Jul 2017 06:58:52
I don't know hab. I think there is another deal in place. JVR would get more than Marleau and probably long term, or chance losing him. JVR is still fairly young but is not part of the core they plan to build around such as Mathews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly and maybe a couple others. With the 3rd year of Marleau's contract being 4 million, they know who needs to be paid at that time. If JVR, a 1st and maybe a prospect could bring in a young stud defenseman to add to the core, I'd be a very happy man.

10.) 03 Jul 2017 16:25:42
I agree, when i saw the term i was concerned. But then when you look more and see that it is front loaded that helps a lot.
The big move has yet to come - Marleau will replace JVR, and his value to a contending team for the next year under a decent salary is going to be worth the defense piece they are looking for. Even if they have to add a bit to get it. They will be in a good place for the next few years and will have to work to replace Marleau after that.

11.) 03 Jul 2017 21:27:34
How does being front loaded matter to the leafs money has never been an issue . That might make a difference to Arizona but it doesn't in toronto. The cap hit is the issue.

12.) 03 Jul 2017 22:55:35
Money will be an issue in 2 years Hab when Mathews and Marner have to sign. Nylander is next year I believe. Marleau making $8 this year is fine, he'll only be making $4 when the others have to sign.

13.) 04 Jul 2017 00:02:18
No sorry the difference in 8 mil or 4mil makes very little difference to the leafs. But the cap hit will.

14.) 04 Jul 2017 06:53:07
You win Hab. Worst FA signing in NHL history.

15.) 04 Jul 2017 07:22:09
No it's by far not the worst. But yes I do win lol.

16.) 04 Jul 2017 07:31:06
The signing I could handle but if it means having to trade jvr then I don't like it. i think jvr is better now and will for sure be better in 3 years. So I think the cap could have been better spent on him even if it did cost a little more.

17.) 04 Jul 2017 11:47:20
Alright Hab, last thing I'm going to say about this. There is no doubt JVR is better. However, scoring goals is not an issue with the leafs. They need to upgrade their defense and JVR is the most proven player that could be packaged to attain a top 4 defenseman. All while not having to give up any of the younger kids. Back to your point, the leafs could've tried to resign JVR and still might. Yes the signing of Marleau would make that more difficult but there are ways to get it done.

What do you guys think the Wild need to do to reach the next level? Minnesota is one of the best American hockey cities and I'd like to see them win a cup. Parise's contract is looking pretty bad IMO with his age and injuries. Koivu is still a solid center but Granlund & Staal I feel will be 1/2 down the middle. Their goaltending is pretty solid as well as the defense. Do you think the Wild/Capitals would be good trading partners to maybe help both teams? I'd love to see Ovechkin in Minnesota if he was really available. Koivu to Montreal for some center depth? Any ideas?

1.) 04 Jun 2017 15:19:17
I really like praise and if Minnesota would retain abit of salary I'd love him on Mathews wing. (2mil retained)

2.) 04 Jun 2017 15:24:18
The Wild will definitely regress next season. I don't see Staal putting the offensives numbers from this season and players like granlund, Zucker and Coyle will need to be really good to help them out. Also Granlund spent all of last season on the wing. They have two really great prospects in Alex Tuch and Joel Eriksson Ek, but they also have some really bad contracts Parise (like u said), Pomminville, and Scandella. They have a lot of cap problems and something on that team needs to change so that Ryan Suter can get that ring.

3.) 04 Jun 2017 15:30:55
I feel they need to get faster and add some scoring bunch on their lower lines. They tend to try and grind out wins. I feel they rely too heavily on 2 or 3 players to score. Maybe trade a Grandlund for a scoring winger. I doubt you get a big return for Koivu. Maybe package him with a pick to Toronto for JVR. Don't know if that really addresses the speed issue. Just spitballing here.
You could also trade a defenseman for Drouin?

4.) 04 Jun 2017 15:44:56
I didn't realize Granlund was playing wing. I was also thinking JVR if they would sacrifice one of their defenseman to TO.

5.) 04 Jun 2017 15:57:25
I like Koivu, however he's starting to age, I think it would cost Habs to much for an aging center, i'd personally like to see a 25 to 28 year old, who can grow with the team. I know, going to be hard as hell to find, especially with Habs lack of assets. unfortunately we have one in Galchenyuk right in front of us, but for some reason he can't do it on Montreal. bet if he does get traded, he'd be the guy the Habs drafted 3rd overall.

EasyE, I do see how you've observed what some teams have been doing for the past few seasons. I also see that you read the news and how Vegas is building through the draft. Philly has been drafting d and goalies for years but once again, great observation. The future is a little trickier, especially when most GM's are tight lipped.

I don't think any fan knows what a GM's plan is Easy E. I'm guessing he hoped he'd sign Radulov and Markov like Sosa said. It's going to be a lot of heavy lifting for Price, like usual. Maybe they come together and score some goals too, who knows.

I'd miss Bozak. I would rather they make a bigger deal for a young RH dman but I'm sure those aren't easy to pull off without trading the young guns.

JVR would have to be a sign and trade for Carolina to even consider this.
