Hey DetoritMantha, Trouba is better then OEL right? Remeber how people wanted Nylander for Trouba? Now you think Marner isn't worth a LHD that the leafs don't even really need (they need a RHD) . Good luck with that. Galchenyuk also sucks. Nylander missed the entire start of the season and training camp and if he played a full season he would still be on pace to have more points then Galchenyuk. That was also without playing with Matthews.
Also Marner is better then OEL. There isn't even a discussion there. Idk why people undervalue leafs players. If Marner was on any other team he would be untouchable. Same with Nylander.

Selanne and Kariya took massive pay cuts and played third line one year for the avalanche. So it's not unheard of. Of course, the avalanche were already successful and so stacked that Kariya and Selanne had to play third line. So big difference between them and this Toronto team. Maybe after Toronto wins a cup or two we will see them be able to get players to buy into a winning culture. Because right now nobody, players are holding out for every single dollar they can squeeze out of Dubas, who for the most part is more than willing to open the wallet.

The Clarkson deal is not about acquiring an asset for Sparks, this is a cap move. May seem odd to acquire a $5.25m contract when your team is tight to the cap, but this is purely a LTIR move for the #Leafs to enter the season with Marner unsigned.
Before this move, the Leafs would not have been able to get full LTIR relief for Horton without Marner being signed, and would have been unable to sign Marner without Horton on LTIR once the season starts.
The Leafs roster will look something like this to start the season, and without Marner signed they cannot elevate close enough to the cap in order to get enough LTIR relief from Horton to sign Marner mid-season
If the Leafs were to enter the season without Horton on LTIR, the total amount of cap space they will have on the day Horton is placed on LTIR will be $5.3m. They can use recalls to get that number closer to $6m, but it's still not enough to sign Marner.
Now, with Horton *and* Clarkson, it looks a little different. If Marner signs before the season starts, the Leafs can get full relief from Horton/ Clarkson, and there's no change from the original plan. On the other hand, this opens up the possibility of another holdout.
If Marner does wait until the regular season has started, the Leafs will need to bury ~$1m in order to be compliant on the first day of the season (Ceci? ), then they can make the necessary recalls to get as close to the cap as possible.
After that, the Leafs will place Horton and Clarkson on LTIR simultaneously, then recalll all the players they had on the roster originally. Mikheyev is waiver exempt and will likely get papered around a bit.
Moral of the story is, the Leafs are preparing to start the season without Marner, and the fans should too. Could just be a negotiating tactic, but who knows. I'll be posting a little later with some exact numbers.

If there is a loophole the leafs will find and use it but by just looking at the numbers the leafs are currently over the cap by about a million. So doesn't that mean the most they could go over right now is around 7.1mil more? So doesn't that mean if someone offer sheets marner for more then that they would have to clear the space to make room for him?

My understanding of it is that the trade was made as a precaution should Marner go into the season unsigned (which would result in a cap hit in the first year that exceeded the AAV, like Nylander last year)
And I think Marner can get a lot more than $9.5 right now, because they have the LTIR as well as the off-season cushion (the 10% overage or whatever it is) .
It all seems overly complicated.
