Anaheim Trades
McTavish
2nd Overall Pick 2023
60th Overall Pick 2023

Toronto Trades
Matthews
28th Overall Pick 2023

Anaheim with a ton of Cap Space can make this happen money wise including signing an extension (a sign and trade would have to be in place) to make it work for The Ducks, Matthews is young enough that he would fit with the rebuild.

Leafs are still in a Cap Space issue, trading Matthews helps huge and restocks the team going forward with Cap Space added, McTavish and probably Fantilli will be the next wave of young forwards coming in, I have heard none of the core 4 will be traded but if a proposal like this is in play you would have to consider it for both teams.

Thoughts ?

Far too much for Matthews. If he wants to sign in Anaheim and Toronto wants that much, just wait the year and keep the assets, or wait until Toronto's ask is at least reasonable.

No point in gutting the prospect depth you've been building up to get him a year early when he won't make you a contender anyways.

Gutting the prospect pool?
Matthews isn't a 30+ Centre in decline, if anything he is about to hit his prime.
This would be an opportunity for Anaheim to add one of the best Centres in The NHL, don't expect Matthews to be on the market after next season, if it isn't Toronto it will be a team that trades for him before July 1.
Adding him now gives Anaheim 2 extra years as only the team owning his rights can sign him for 8 years, you include next season that's 9 years compared to 7 years as a UFA.
I believe if this proposal is out there both teams would be interested imo.

Sorry Pinball it isn't good for Anaheim. You want two top 3 picks for one year of Matthews. Anaheim tells you to pound sand. He's good, but not that good especially when you factor in his current contract and add his next in there as well.

It's unlikely Matthews signs an 8 year deal imo. He'll sign another short to medium one and try to cash in again.

As I said he doesn't help Anaheim much next year, so if he wants to sign there that bad, they can wait and keep the 2 top 3 assets.

Seems better than usual but Anaheim would easily refuse. McTavish is really good and fantelli may be better than matthews.

If a leafs did something extremely unethical like sign him to a 8 year contract and now he’s off the market teams can no longer sign him he’s a leaf and he wants to be a leaf then they turned around and traded him before his NMC kicks in then this would be fair but that’s not going to happen. He’s worth slightly more then what Erik Karlsson got at the moment. In theory yes you can wait until free agency but then you lose certainty.

That's why I stated a sign and trade, Calgary did that last off season with Tkachuk and Florida.

Memarcus nailed it.

If you're trying to get a great regular season team, Matthews is your guy.

If you're trying to build a winner, get someone with heart.

Last but not least, the other 31 teams do not exist to save the leafs from their own bad asset management. Dubas inherited a sweet hand and played it very poorly. Cue the next rebuild.

Why would a playoff team rebuild? Teams make money by being competitive and the leafs are. They make more money by getting bounced in round 1 every year then they would not making playoffs. Just a dumb take the leafs wont rebuild just like they won’t move Mathews, Nylander, Marner, Rielly or Tavares.
