Kraken probably don't do this because Eberle is someone they seem to want to build around, and while Appleton hasn't broken through the way the Jets and Kraken both have wanted him to, he's still a promising player that is comparable to Dube in value. The 1st is nice but they may not want this deal.

If they don't actually care much for the establishment of core players and just want to rebuild, they may view this trade as a steal for that pick.

Flames also don't do this-- even though I don't think the Kraken do this, in terms of value the Flames are giving up more. If they're trading their first round pick, they may want to be adding a piece rather than just swapping players in similar roles (neither of which is a significant improvement, and could even be a loss of value given Eberle's age and Appleton's lack of scoring)
