So you want Seattle to take back a worse rental and retain, all for a 2nd a year from now? I think Seattle would do better just trading Gio for picks alone from the upcoming draft.

Which picks @memarcusjoe? What is Giordano valued at with 50% retained and does that change if he’s traded now vs the deadline? What picks do you foresee Seattle getting?

Maybe it takes a 2022 first instead of 2023 second but Seattle is going to have to take a contract back to get the most value for Gio.

Only top contenders will be interested in trading a high pick for an older pending UFA like Gio. The top contenders are all up against the cap, none of them can afford to take on even half Gio's cap hit without sending a similar cap hit the other way.

Zadorov is perfect for that since his cap hit is only 400k more than half of Gio's cap hit. Z is a UFA this summer too so his cap won't be on the books next year unless Seattle decides to resign him (likely for less) .

Of course that's all assuming Seattle doesn't decide to just resign Gio and keep him.

Trevor, what I'm saying is that Mox is asking Seattle to do Calgary a favour and retain on the better player's salary, plus take on a worse player so they end up paying more for Zadorov for the rest of the year than they would by keeping their captain. And all they get out of it is a late second.

So for Seattle, why bother? Just keep their captain and current face of the franchise, pay him less and probably get a 2nd or maybe more at the TDL if they decide to move him. There's not enough incentive for Seattle to help Calgary out.

@memarcusjoe

The cap hit difference would be 400k but Seattle would only be paying Z for the last part of the year. It wouldn't cost them 400k, more like 100k or so.

IOW for ~100k they get a second round pick.

Or like I said in my second comment maybe it takes a first instead of a second.

Seattle won't be getting a first or second without taking a contract back to balance the cap. Unless you can name a true contender with enough cap space (more than 3 million) to just absorb Gio's cap hit.

@memarcusjoe, I understand your point and don't disagree with you at all, I'm just curious what you think Seattle should demand in return for Giordano @ 50% retained and whether that changes depending on if that happens now or at the TDL.

Calgary would likely have to move Zadorov out separately to make the necessary cap space available as @MoxNix pointed out, but I'm sure other teams would be interested given his size and/ or needing an injury replacement. Seattle could ship Zadorov out too for another 3rd/ 4th pick in addition to the proposed 2nd as well.

@MoxNix, wouldn't it be $3.375/ 4 retained = 843k + Zadorov's 100k difference by your math if they were both traded at the TDL, assuming only 1/ 4 of the season and salary payable remains? So that'd work out to being only 943k for a 2nd Round Pick if they took Zadorov back? Seattle could absolutely try Zadorov out and consider signing him instead next year given he's much younger and could sign for cheaper than 3.75mil? If the trade was done now, a 2nd may not be enough compensation for Seattle to consider retaining 50% of Giordano's for the rest of the season, but it may be at the TDL, as you proposed, but I bet they get a better offer.

In the end, other than sentimental reasons, I have to believe there are better options available than Girodano and we may be able to get somebody back with term, especially if it will cost a 1st Round Pick. Like who/ what'd be better: Giordano, Chiarot or McNabb OR another LD altogether who has 2-3 years left on their contract in exchange for a 1st Rd Pick? Do we only need a rental since Mackey or Valimaki should be ready to go full-time next year or do we make them continue to compete?

Trevor, it's hard to say how much a GM will give up for Giordano, especially if he's retained. There are still GM's around, like Holland, that don't have a problem overpaying for past their expiration date players. So, if they're only getting a 2nd for him now and no cap savings, then they might as well just wait to the TDL and see if there are any injuries that make someone panic and drive up the price.

24 Dec 2021 23:51:32
And yes Mox, if the pick was changed to a first that may be enough to get Seattle to bite. But would Calgary want to do that?

9.) 25 Dec 2021
25 Dec 2021 01:36:10
@TrevorA, I think Mackey is ready right now but I don't think he's waiver exempt anymore which is probably the only reason Valimaki got a shot early this year instead of Mackey.

Valimaki could be sent back down without having to clear waivers first. If they call Mackey up they won't be able send him back down without putting him on waivers and he'd get snapped up for sure.

I don't think they even really need a rental they just need to replace Zadorov. In fact I'd rather replace him with Mackey and gain a bit over 2 mil in cap space to go towards filling that RW hole.

@memarcusjoe Holland. I actually think the Oilers could (and should) be interested in Gio as a rental. I'd hate to see it happen but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they outbid everyone else and wind up with him.

25 Dec 2021 01:54:56
A first would be just a bit too much for my liking but it's probably not too much for Treliving.

Sounds like we’re all kind of on the same page.

@MoxNix’s proposal was for the TDL, so we’ll see what happens in a couple months to see what that value ends up being. I see Seattle Trading Giordano for Prospects and/ or Picks, but they could also do either a Trade with Conditional Picks depending on whether they sign extensions OR a Sign and Trade for a guy like Zadorov, if they want to negotiate a contract extension to secure him for longer at the same time.

13.) 25 Dec 2021
25 Dec 2021 10:59:54
I'm pretty sure trades conditional on resigning a player are no longer allowed.

14.) 25 Dec 2021
25 Dec 2021 17:25:01
Mox is correct, you can no longer have picks be conditional on re-signing.

15.) 25 Dec 2021
25 Dec 2021 18:55:36
Okay, good to know and yes, I understand Mackey isn't waivers exempt, so once they call him up, he either needs to stay up, be traded or CGY will likely lose him for nothing to waivers.

I think there was some confusion with Valimaki, they didn't remember he was waivers exempt, even Cap Friendly didn't have him exempt till Tre did the math and figured it out.

I guess CGY's waiting for a Trade to happen with Zadorov before they bring Valimaki or Mackey back up, but will/ can Sutter really trust the Rookies in a playoff run? I still think they look for a rental, but we'll have to wait and see.

Chiarot is the rental I'd want on defense.

Gio would be an even better option except I worry about the effect bringing back a long time former captain could have on the team. Especially so soon after he left in the first place.
