Calgary Trades
Monahan*

Toronto Trades
Rielly
Kerfoot

*Calgary retains 50% of Monahan's contract.

Flames with the loss of Giordano are in need of a Top 2 Defenceman and Rielly would fit that bill, Rielly for Monahan straight up would be fair alone, but because Calgary will be retaining half of his remaining 2yrs Kerfoot has to be added for that compensation.

Leafs are always looking to improve with a limited Cap this year more so than any other year, I see the same situation with Rielly like Hyman not resigning because of Cap after this season, so it's time to trade your best trade chip and open the door for Sandin and Liljegren to play fulltime in the NHL, Monahan replacing Kerfoot makes Toronto better upfront.

Thoughts ?

Nope, no retention.

And we don't want Kerfoot either.

I would change one thing in my proposal and that's the retain of Monahan's contract, I believe to make it more fair and believable instead of 50% retained I am changing that to 1.75m retained for this upcoming season and the next as Monahan has 2yrs left on his contract.

I don’t see the value of giving up the term on Monahan with no extension on Reilly. It would need to be a sign and trade.

Also don’t see retention being required on Calgary’s side. They could likely move Monahan’s contract to someone who can likely fit his cap of 6.375 and get value for him without taking back Kerfoot and retaining a lot.

Monahan’s value has dropped due to low offensive output but his defensive side makes up for that a bit to still make him a valuable trade piece.

Monahan for Reilly straight up might happen just because the Flames are looking to shake things up, have been shopping him and he's had a couple down years in a row.

Monahan is signed for 2 more years, will more than likely bounce back next year and unless it's a big bounce back is likely to get less money in 2 years on his next contract.

Reilly needs a new contract in just 1 year, is likely to get 7-7.5 mil/ year possibly even more and there's no guarantee he will resign with Calgary.

Toronto would be counting on Monahan bouncing back and saving some money. Calgary would be counting on being able to extend or resign Reilly to a reasonable contract that fits their salary structure.

Monahan is ready for a rebound season and become the 30 goal scorer he was, I think that’s why management is super hesitant on trading him. Haven’t really seen the same offense outta him but got to take into consideration that he’s been working on his two way game that’s why he isn’t producing as much. Calgary isn’t retaining, but Toronto has no need for Monahan.

It's awfully nice of every team in the league to want to retain salary for the leafs.

Even though this would be a shakeup for both teams. I see Calgary saying No due to the uncertainty of signing Reilly.

Toronto would likely say No because they rather keep their defensive depth than add a forward who wouldn’t likely get the Top 6 ice time at his natural centre position in Toronto ( Matthews and Tavares blocking him)

@NotACasual I agree with most of that except the part about Toronto having no use for Monahan.

I think Toronto would use Monahan at LW one of the top two lines. On the first line with Matthews and Marner that would create a new "3M" line in Toronto.

He'd be a great insurance policy to have around in case one of Matthews or Marner gets hurt too.

Make that in case Matthews or Tavares gets hurt.

Monahan a d rielly are basically the same points in the last 3 seasons and rielly is a defenceman. Would give rielly fir that strait up let alone adding kerfoot. To many leaf haters here.

Giller23 the fact that you brought up points and complained about leafs haters lol. There’s obviously more to the trade, like a big one being that Rielly will become a UFA.

Defensive side? Alex Semin Is a better defensive player.

Exactly, sign Reilly at 8x7 first and Calgary probably adds something to the deal. But if the Leafs could sign him for that, they'd probably keep him.

@Nylander Even Pinball has a better idea of player values than you do. Go back to sportsnet with the rest of the oiler fans.

Lmao 7% defence. He’s a solid PP player but he’s not a player you win with.

Those war things are junk. Monahan is a decent two way guy and is more than just good on the PP.

26-1 is the widest margin yet I've seen for a Pinball trade to be down-voted.
