3 Team Trade Proposal.

Carolina
DHamilton (Toronto)

Columbus
SJones (Carolina)

Toronto
Rielly (Columbus)

Carolina would have a Sign and Trade in place with DHamilton for The Leafs to even consider this proposal.

The leafs can just sign Hamilton as a UFA in a month.

Yes you're right The Leafs can just sign him when he becomes a UFA, but when Carolina announced that they have given permission for DHamilton talk to other Teams, that means that if a Team agrees on a Contract for DHamilton there will be a sign and trade deal and he won't be out there as a UFA.
The only reason Carolina is doing this is because they know DHamilton isn't resigning with The Hurricanes and instead of getting nothing for him they at least get a player back in this proposal it's SJones.
On the ice each Team does what it can to beat it's opponent, but the business side of it GMs do look to improve yes but also look to help each other out, just like the NFoligno situation as SJ jumped in as a third team and took a portion of NFoligno's contract so The Leafs had the Cap Space to add him.

He still can become a UFA eventually and a team can just be patient.

I think the sign and trade is as simple as how much does year 8 cost. I can simply see the leafs trading liljgren to Carolina for that 1 extra year. Leafs get a needed right shot pairing Dman for 8 years to play with a left side brodie. Muzzin keeps with holl. And we have sandin still developing on the 3rd line with the flavor of the season.

Carolina gets a young rhd, inexpensive to allow them to resign their key rfa, keeping the bulk of their team in tact. Collectively it's a win win for both teams.

That leaves Reilly an odd man out. The leafs would probably prefer to trade him west coast to a rebuilding team for draft picks, or younger players that can be more ready for the 2022 or 2023 season. A team that could use a good lhd is likely Vancouver.

Columbus says no, Reilly isn't bad but Jones is better. Toronto would have to add something good.

Hamilton would probably fetch a 5th in a sign and trade he has all the leverage. He picks a team to sign and he goes there. No way he gets moew then a 4th in that case as the team he wants to go to will just sign him as a UFA.

Jones has basically said he isn't resigning, Columbus doesn't have any leverage knowing that and getting Rielly would be an upgrade knowing they don't have to worry about what to do with Jones.
So no Jones in this situation isn't better than Rielly.

@Pinball

Jones is still signed for another year. Considering how many teams would love to get him that's all the leverage they need. Of course the other team would want to talk to Jones first and make sure he'll sign an extension with them.

In Toronto's case Columbus will want more than just Reilly. The situation really isn't much different than the Dubois trade other than Dubois being on a new 2 year deal vs Jones with 1 year left and Laine being a pending RFA rather than a pending UFA.
