Basically Toronto has 2 million dollars added onto their cap after this trade for next year. So the cap evens out a 4 mill on each team.

The stats of the two players are actually very similar this year.
However, because Johnson is older and likely declining, while Holl can be a stead top 6 defenceman for the next 4-5 years, I think the leafs pass. Dubas wants to keep this team young and cheap. Adding Eric Johnson to the mix just doesn't seem like something he would do.

Overall who is the better player? Probably Johnson. But who has more years left in them, Holl. I understand the trade from this point of view. I just don't see either team making it.
