Prior to expansion draft:

J. Eberle to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for C. Ceci.


- Allows Ottawa to protect Mark Methot on defence, and losing one of Z. Smith/ C. MacArthur/ A. Burrows (Z. Smith most likely) for nothing is not as costly as losing one of their top four defensemen for nothing.

- Ottawa adds a scoring forward who can ignite alongside of a player like Kyle Turris, and could provide them with decent scoring. 6 million is a lot to pay, however, Ottawa's window to win is now, with Craig Anderson/ Dion Phaneuf/ Bobby Ryan/ Kyle Turris/ Derrick Brassard all in their prime.

- As well, the departure of Ceci opens the door for Thomas Chabot, Ben Harpur, Frederik Claesson and Chris Wideman to step into extended roles. Wideman has been deserving of one, just couldn't get it before though.

- Edmonton adds a RHD, for a player who was currently under a lot of heat with the fans/ media of Edmonton.

- Cody Ceci proved that he was a good top 4 defenseman in the playoffs, and watching him in the Pittsburgh/ Ottawa series showed that he could be a shutdown player too.

- Edmonton also gains 4 million in cap space, which is crucial for their resigning of Connor McDavid/ Leon Draisaitl.

- I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING! SEKERA WON'T WAIVE HIS NMC, AND THIS IS RUINED! I HAVE A PLAN FOR THAT TOO. Since Sekera has such a long and hefty contract, I think Vegas would be better off taking someone like Jordan Oesterele. However, Sekera may not buy into this theory. For that reason, Edmonton deals a 3rd round pick to Las Vegas in exchange for them to not select Andrej Sekera. Vegas accepts the deal, then Edmonton tells Sekera there is nothing to worry about, and Sekera waives his NMC. This Vegas/ Edmonton deal would happen maybe a day or two before the Ceci/ Eberle deal; that way Vegas doesn't really know why the move for Sekera was made.

No from ottawa ceci is a young top 4 rhd why trade him for a defensively lasy wing who won't fit into Guys system. Ceci will be protected over methot all day every day if you had to pick a player to protect who would you choose ceci or methot? Methot a 30 year old shutdown lhd can be replaced more easily than a 23 2way rhd.

I never said to protect Methot over Ceci. Nobody said so. What I said is, would you be okay with losing Methot for nothing? Is that worth it? Trading Ceci allows you to keep Methot, and also allows you to bring in a forward who can be protected from the expansion draft. Plus, Mark Methot and Erik Karlsson play really well together, it would be bad to break their synergy, if Methot was to be taken by Vegas.

I don't think Ebs is that overpaid. 6 million is a bit much, but 5 is surely reasonable. he's not oft-injured, and he has a track record of being a solid 50 point guy. His playoff made his value dip, that being said, he is a good scorer.

I like it Cici isn't great but Eberle is overpaid but would boosts Ottawas top 6. Cici would be nice on the 2nd pair.

Tss i'd rather lose methot for nothing than trade ceci for eberle. Lose a young top 4 d for a winger who probably won't work out under Guy plus gain 3.5 million in cap ya no thanks. If we lose methot we gain 5 million cap plus what we have left we can sign any free agent available to replace him. Yes methot has good chemistry with karlsson but karlsson is the best defensemen in the world so he'll play well with any decent top 4 d. So ya doesn't make any sense for ottawa.

I'm not exactly sure about this, but if Sekera has a NMC in his contract, Edmonton is required to protect him in the upcoming Expansion Draft. If this is the case, why would Edmonton give up a draft pick to protect a player they can't draft?

I think Ottawa would trade a pick to protect Methot if they didn't want him gone. Even if he is gone, they have Claesson and Chabot on the left side next year ready to replace him. Both guys are young and Claesson really impressed me in the playoffs this year.
