I think they'll end up doing something like this. JVR is a great complimentary piece, but nowhere near the value to get a top pairing D. They could settle for a good prospect and picks.

I doubt the leafs are willing to take ladds contract but it's not the worst idea I've ever seen.

Taking that ladd contract back is a really bad idea. Have too many young players that look like they're on the way to needing big raises in a cpl years and it would really be a mistake to lose nylander, brown, hyman or zaitsev (obviously Matthews and marner would be paid first) . Got lucky with Clarkson, can't do it again. Obviously getting a good D prospect and a first helps, but got to try to solve the D problem without putting themselves in cap hell down the road.
