Big Trade at Draft

Philadelphia
- G Mike Smith 5.7M x 3 years
- D Michael Stone RFA
- 2nd 16'

Arizona
- G Steve Mason 4.1M x 1 year
- F Matt Read 3.6M x 2 years
- D MacDonald 5M x 4 years
- 1st 16'

Breakdown

Philadelphia dumps 7M onto Arizona (Still have to sign Stone) Which helps them reach the cap floor while aquiring a #1 goalie and upgrading in the draft. Philly gets a veteran goalie signed longer then a year and a top 4 RHD in Stone. Smith is more money but has 1 less year then McDonald so contracts are about a wash. Read can provide some veteran experience to the youth in Arizona and they can get a solid player for the future at #15. Philly still gets a early 2nd which will give them 3 2nd round picks if I'm not mistaken?

Smith is definitely a goalie that Philly could benefit from and end their goalie troubles.

Pretty decent value as usual Bud. However I think Philly passes. Mason was decent most of the season and Neuvirth was a very good backup. They still have Stolarz in the system too. Just don't think Smith would be an upgrade but I could be wrong as I don't really follow the Flyers. Philly should also keep that pick and take the best available F. Bellows may be available when they pick.

Arizona will not give up value to reach the cap floor. They will use the space to take cap dumps and getting other value for taking the cap dump. Cap floor is easy to reach. Nothing is stopping them from giving a bottom pair D man a 1 year 10 mill deal to reach the floor and give up no assets or long term flexibility in the process.
