Sorry @paolozza, but dion, considering his circumstances is a really good player.
statistically, he plays against the highest quality of competition in the nhl. He also statistically highest percentage of defensive zone starts, meaning he plays against the opponents top lines, a majority of the time in his own zone.
He plays top link PK, PP, and upwards of 23 minutes a game regularly and was given the "C" in the toughest hockey market to play in.
He was drafted 9th overall, was a member of multiple WJC teams and was a norris trophy candidate when paired with a credible defensive defenseman.
clearly the guy is poorly and over used by the leafs, and formerly the flames after his norris-candidate season.
@Shankar
franson is far from horrible, he's certaintly better than most of the dmen on edmonton
he had over 200 hits and 110 blocked shots last year. sure the -20 was bad, but he's on the leafs (statistically one of the worst defensive teams in the league). still not enough to get eberle, but he's far from horrible
Shane prince is not a top end prospect, a good one, but you're on meth if you seriously consider him top end
top end on ottawa maybe
So you give up a 23 year old centre who scored 50 points last year, a 23 year old defenseman with great upside and a first round pick for a 29 year old centre who can't stay healthy and makes 8.25 million a year. please
staal is a good player but those assets are too valuable
leafs are better off packaging that for someone who can actually play defense (Marc Staal)
If you're looking at trade value then.
