Buffalo trades
Ristolainen & Sobotka
Cap wise it works for the Sabres & they gain much needed depth. A vet C to help on D & the PK. LW scoring in Sven. Affordable RHD to play up & down the pairings.
Canucks free up the roster logjam & gain cap space immediately & for 2020. Risto won't be needed to be overplayed & better off for it helping out scoring. Sobotka is serviceable for his last year on the bottom 6. Allows flexibility to trade Tanev or let him walk as a UFA.
Tbh i'm not sure i want this trade thinking the Sabres get a pretty good return. Long term & cap space is my motive.

Easy no from Buffalo.
They get no value back for Ristolainen.
Sutter is a overpaid 3rd line centre, Baertschi is extremely injury prone and when he's healthy he's always inconsistent. Stecher is a bottom pairing defenceman.
Also, salary cap wise this doesn't work for Buffalo.
They currently have -1M in cap space.
5.4 (Risto) + 3.5 (Sobotka) - 1 (Negative cap space) = 7.9M
4.3 (Sutter) + 3.3 (Baertschi) + 2.3 (Stetcher) = 9.9M
9.9 > 7.9
Because of this trade not only do the Sabres get worse but they gain an extra million in cap space debt.

Risto is the best player in the trade.
Sobotka is a cap thrown in.
Sutter is a 3C and overpaid for only 2 more years but helps where the Sabres lack most. C depth and D.
Sven is injury prone but isn’t a lost cause albeit some risk comes with him but can help out scoring.
Stecher truly a 3rd pairing D yes but is useful still.
Overall it’s a hopeful trade on the Canucks side.
Risto is good for scoring and needs to be in a better position and not relied on to play too many shutdowns minutes.
Depth and experience is the selling point if Botterill sees it that way. If a better offer out there then take it. His ask i assume is too high and Risto being RHD is his biggest carrot.

Uhm, how do the Sabres lack depth on defence?
Also, I'm a bit confused on where this LW depth issue is.
They signed Johansson to be their 2nd line LW and Jeff Skinner is their first.
After that they have Vesey and Girgensons as the 3rd and 4th line LW.
And the centre depth issue is definitely arguable.
Where is Sutter going to play? 2nd line? Nope. Mittelstadt. 3rd line? Nope. Rodrigues. 4th line? Nope. Larsson.
All of Buffalo's centres are cheaper and better than Sutter. (Larsson is arguable)

Well Columbus fans said they would trade Andersson for Eichel in a 1 for 1 swap on HFBoards. He’s the best in the NHL for what he does and on a team like the leafs who lacks a physical edge I’d take Andersson over Boeser 1000/10 times.

It's clear if its lop sided but not when you listen to regular people say opinions on a website. can't just say your teams player is better. An opinion that andersson has more value is ludercris. Honestly, I think it's close value wise.
Oilers get their RD so Kris Russell can go back to playing LD, and Sven Baertschi for LW depth.
Vancouver gets a risky player with Jesse P, but if they can turn him around it'll be a steal.

A few glitches on this trade.
1. Gagner played very well in Edm and was 10x better than Strome or Spooner for his Salary. If he plays as well this year as he did last year he is an NHL'er not AHL demotion as indicated.
2nd and most importantly.
Everyone seems to want Jesse for peanuts. Not happening as per Holland's statement. Good on Holland playing hardball with the spoiled brat who thinks that he can dictate his will upon an NHL franchise when he hasn't proven anything yet. Most kids would kill to play in the NHL, doesn't matter which team.
It will take a massive gamble by a GM to pry him out of Edmonton right now with either a top 6'er, or an unprotected 1st.
No one wants to give that for a risk like that, and Holland won't let the brat go for less than that. So STALEMATE time.
Realistically Holland's plan to send Pulu to Europe to have a bit of an attitude adjustment, and prove he can actually skate after double hip surgery is best for everyone. Losing his agent and blaming his child like request on the agent is something I think he needs to do to save face to get back to the NHL.
Ask is too high, return is too low. So off to Euro land you go. Show everyone what you're worth and then perhaps a realistic trade can get negotiated.

I'm an Oilers fan, and to be honest I'm pretty biased at times. But no way are we getting a top 6 player or an unprotected first for Jesse.
Sven Baertschi has the skills to become a top 6 players, he just has issues with injuries.
