The Jets would want quality over quantity in any trade for Laine so this trade wouldn't improve the Jets enough to do it.

I think its a good start but as much as Laine has inconsistencies with scoring his value as a young pure goal scorer is still higher than this. I would think Montreal would need to add a conditional 2020 2nd rounder, something where it becomes a 1st rounder if they make the Stanley cup finals or at least East finals?

Habs say no Gallagher might not score as much as liane but he plays with heart and solo. He is a leader and helps mold the dressing room into a team. People may think I’m crazy but I’d rather take a 30 goal scorer that energizes the team and does all the little things right then a maybe 50 goal scorer that if he’s not scoring is doing nothing. Also Brook looks like he could be a solid top 4 D in a few years and Byron is much the same as Gallagher.

You're absolutely right you are crazy. A 21 year old 6 foot 5 pure goal scorer doesn't come around every draft, and Caufield isn't going to develop immediately into that type of role with MTL.

You value heart and soul in the locker room, which is important for team chemistry in the locker room no doubt, but it doesn't translate into anything on the ice. If the MTL fan base overall had heard that Laine was an option and this was what WPG accept but Bergevin declined, there'd be a riot.

If you got rid of Byron as the Jets don't want a 3'-0" tall, 30 year old 4th line player and replaced him with Montreal's 1st from this year or Poehling/ Suzuki, you would have a decent base to start from.

The problem is Liane might be 6’4” but plays like 5’10 never uses his size. Puts in 0 effort and with the fact that he makes comments like he is deserves everything. Again I’d rather a constant 30+ goal scorer that makes others better then a 50 that leaves you to be 5v4 in your own zone. Plus the cost difference between the players as Liane is probably looking for 7-11 range while rn Gallagher is under 4 and will probably be looking for max 7.

Yeah I’m with CTC, 50 goal potential aside the dude is a liability on the ice otherwise, and no I’m not just saying that, advanced analytics show he is a hinderance. But even more so, when someone on your team has to yell at you to start moving, that is telling enough.

Laine is so lazy, uncaring and unenthusiastic on the ice that I’d give up a potential extra 20 goals and pick Gallagher over him.

Also, @DrwDave, usually your pretty spot on, but saying that heart and soul doesn’t translate to anything on the ice is nothing sort of foolish. Ask any hockey player and they’ll tell you the exact opposite.

Wendel Clark was hockey personified. As much heart and soul as it gets. Compare his stats to Alexander Daigle’s. Looking past the headline numbers, and assuming Daigle (in other words, compare relatively, not absolute), guess what? Daigle wins. Widely considered the biggest draft bust of all time, over the course of his career, adjusted for games played, and Daigle comes out at least even to Clark, who was also a first overall pick. Daigle could have beat Gretzky’s records, that’s how good he was.

Heart and soul are important, yes. But skill is what wins you the game. I’m not picking sides here. Ok. Yes i am. I agree with the DrwDave. It’s nice to have a second opinion. But in this case, I will just believe what the good doctor has said here: talent and skill is what defines the new ‘NHL’.

@vertius

Wendell Clark had more heart and soul than anyone who ever played the game. Compare his stats to Daigle, who could have been the best player ever. He really was that talented. You can look his videos up on YouTube. You’ll see what I mean. Do a check of the ppg, etc. Not just the headline numbers, which are actually not that bad,

I love heart and soul. But skill and talent is what gets the results. Jagr was crucified for not being “heart and soul”, but he is generally agreed be top 5 players of all time.

Quality over quantity eh? Maybe if Laine put up better numbers than Keller he would deserve more.
