What's the point of including Horton's contract? I don't get it.

Still hoping tavares signs here which means we need players like dermott, liljegren and (down the road) Sandin on ELCs to patch up our defense. Trading our best or second best chance at developing our own really good cheaper Dman for a guy that makes 4 times as much just to rid ourselves of a contract that effects the team in no way is dumb.

Horton’s contract still goes against the leafs cap hit during the offseason until September when he is LTIR eligible also his contract is uninsured so you’d have to pay the actual salary.

Yeah but leafs don’t care about the cash payout to players, only cap hit. So they would rather pay millions to a retired player on an uninsured contract than lose a kid that could be a big part of their future. Things like this is the only money advantage leafs have anymore with a hard Cap in place. So they’re happy to use that advantage. Being the richest, or one of, has few bonuses on the ice anymore but this is definitely one of them.

Correct me if I’m wrong but you need to be under the cap before you can put guys on LTIR before the start of the season.

You’re correct Ebsoultely and I wasn’t defending the trade or suggesting they need to trade Horton @unbiased Jim.

Yeah, they can just be creative as to who starts the season on the roster and not to make it all work. They have 26 mill this year anyway. Even if JT signs and then fill a cpl holes, they should be good. But you are correct about in certain situations, it could still mess with your plan a bit.
