So I brainstormed an idea

Detroit gets:
Tomas greiss
Calvin Picard
2nd from islanders

Toronto gets:
4th from Detroit

Carolina gets:
Jimmy Howard
3rd from Detroit (lowest of their selections)

Carolina then signs
Michael hutchinson

It seems like an overpayment for Picard but I think it solidifies a few things for several teams.

Islanders pay a premium to get a solid Stanley cup winning goaltender, with 1 yr on his contract, but sign a reliable backup who could be the goaltender of the foreseeable future. Gives a sign of commitment to show they are serious for Tavares to resign.

Toronto gets a marginal asset for a waiver required goaltender instead of losing him for nothing

Detroit gets a satisfactory starting goalie with a bright up and commer with nhl experience who can take over the crease through their rebuild. They up a 3rd to 2nd.

Yeah I’m confused too. Isles trade greiss and a 2nd but have nothing coming back. And Carolina takes on Howard’s 5 or 6 mill salary, to go with darlings 4 mill and then sign Hutchison, so they have 3 mediocre goalies making like 12-13 mill?!

From the leafs perspective, I see sparks being the back up next year. Pickard is a really good AHL goalie too, and good for depth. I don’t see them trading him for just a 4th because Andersen has had his injury problems and depth in net after Andersen and sparks is thin for the leafs. I’m not saying he’s worth more than a 4th in the market, but I think he’s worth more than that within the teams structure.

The issue with the goaltending is Picard and Mcelenny would need to clear waivers to play in the ahl. Keeping sparks who would be waiver exempt as the #1 while developing the other goalie and keeping mcelleny who earned his spot as the back up for this season to run out his contract.

Then sparks comes in and then the ahl reigns go to kaskisou without seriously damaging the goaltending.
