Doesn't seem like much coming from Toronto but we would be eating cap for them inorder for them to resign Carlson.
Brooks Orpik is obviously a cap dump with a year left at 5.5M. Niskanen has 3 years left at 5.75M and would be a good partner for Rielly in my opinion.

If Niskanen continues to decline in play, the Leafs will have over 10 million dollars committed to him and Zaitsev for minimum 3 years, all while having to work out the new contracts for the big 3, plus Kapanen and Johnsson coming up for renewals as well. Not very well thought out, Leafs with the hard no.

The Leafs window to take cap dumps is about over. They have some great pieces to build around. They should start focusing on plugging holes with complementary talent, not cast-offs.

Ya but why get to cap dumps and give a second to get them. Unless Niskanen is worth his money which is probably not true since he is ok but for 5.5 million its too much.

Leafs have assets to get a good Dman and are not in a position anymore to take other teams bad money. If we’re trading a decent pick and 2 young players, plus taking a cap dump i'd want someone better than niskanen or atleast someone as good as niskanen but on a very team friendly contract, not 5.75x3. That would be us paying all that to have niskanen as our highest paid Dman and second highest paid player overall behind marleau this season (depending on Nylander of course) . Bad plan.
