According to Pierre Lebrun, Stamkos and Yzerman has a hand shake deal all along. If they couldn't reach an agreement to stay and play for the Lightning they would do a sign and trade deal. This is brilliant and could be a new trend in the NHL because as a UFA you can only sign 7 years with a new team, while resigning with current team allows you that extra year to 8 years. This would be a smart way to more assets for star players. Pierre Lebruns words, not mine. Another smart move from yzerman though.

I'm sure this happens from time to time. you can't really call it a smart move by yzerman because it was more of stamkos willing to do it. Some players would have probably been less eager to go that route. But I'm sure some would and do. This wasn't the first time this happened and it won't be the last.

Well its not like Stamkos would not have had an advantage as well in getting that extra year of security.

That's called collusion and is against the CBA. It is also illegal.
