Nikita Soshnikov and Eric Fehr to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2018 5th Round Pick.

Then.

Rinat Valiev, Trevor Moore, Joffrey Lupul (contract) and a 2018 3rd Round Draft Pick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Matt Stajan.

Through this, Toronto clears away 4 roster spots that were being hemmed by unnecessary players, and a guy who is decent, but is only on the roster for contract reasons.

Sosh is a decent fourth liner at cheap, Fehr's a cap dump, them packed together for a 5th seems pretty fair. Hell, I'd be willing to take a 6th.

Valiev is a career AHLer, Moore is a maybe 4th liner and Lupul is literally useless. Stajan has 0 points and is on a 3 million dollar contract. The third balances out because of Lupul's salary, and the contract spots. Stajan can be a good vet presence who can be a press-box guy/ fill in for Moore, but let's face it, he's merely a cap dump.

Yes, these are two useless trades, but these allow the Leafs to have space for more players. Vegas has tons of space, and Calgary would be willing to get rid of Stajan and get something of decent value back for him. These kinds of moves allow the Leafs to be more flexible in future trade talks.
