Leafs: JVR

Vegas: Colin Miller

Why leafs do it: the leafs have obvious forward depth, especially on the wings waiting for a bigger role (kapanen, Leivo, soshnikov) . The chances of them bringing back JVR is very small beyond this year anyway. They can get a 25-26 year old solid RHD with a bomb of a shot for the PP that they haven’t had since maybe Bryan McCabe (phaneufs was a rocket but never hit the net) . They can extend him right away at a reasonable cap hit and have Rielly, Miller, Gardiner, Zaitsev, all between 23 and 27 and all for less than $18 mill.

Why vegas does it: Vegas has D depth that they have tried to move and make room on that crowded blue line. Getting JVR also gives them 3 options in March. They can resign Him to replace James Neal if they trade him, they can trade both for a huge boost to their prospect and draft pick pool or they can trade him for the type of package they were hoping to get for Neal if they wanted to keep Neal now that he’s kind of become the early fave of the organization and thriving in the role.

Not too long ago I was hoping for the moon in a JVR trade but I think it’s time to realize that leafs need a D that can play now, and most teams willing to pay a big price for a UFA scorer are giving picks.

Honestly, pretty good. Maybe a 3rd/ 4th from Vegas, but even that may be pushing it.

However, i have a very strange gut feeling that JVR will resign with Toronto. Its not my idea, its just a weird feeling. I heard him say he's willing to take about the same money on a max deal. I don't want i, but I feel that it will happen, like 4.5 x 7 years or sumtin like that.

I think teams like Edmonton, Carolina, or other teams that need scoring will pay more. I think the leafs want picks and prospects. I know leaf fans think they are going for a cup, I just think that's a bit premature. They are still a year or two away. The leafs have to win a playoff round first! They can probably get a similar defenseman in free agency.

I think if jvr's demands are within the leafs budget, it would be a good move to resign him. but i agree with vancity if they do trade him it should be for draft picks.

I would keep JVR in a heart beat if it’s a 4.5 cap hit. Reality is though that guys with less points (which isn’t everything, but it is what we judge a player like him on because he’s not great defensively) are getting 6mill.

Also I could have mentioned that Miller is in the right age range and had over 100 pts in 180ish OHL games for The greyhounds while leafs assistant GM Dubas was running that organization. It’s been reported that they have kept in touch too. I think leafs like this player enough to make the deal.

And VanCity, I’m not saying the leafs are ready to win the cup, I’m just saying they have accumulated a ton of young assets at all positions that they don’t have room for. I think a 25 year old NHL Dman is a good plan over 2 more draft picks to add to the log jam. And getting Colin Miller isn’t saying the work is done and we have to win today lol he’s not a Norris caliber Shea Weber at 32 years old on a huge contract, He’s a just a good improvement on what they have.

The real log jam would be from adding another middling defenceman to the current roster imo, why not stock the shelves for four years from now? I just think unless its a deal for a doughty/ ekblad caliber RHD, the leafs should just let it be. i like carrick and i wouldn't take borgman out either.

I get that he’s not a stud Dman but I also think if that guy isn’t available, there’s other ways to do it. Ideally you have a #1, 2,3,4, 5 and 6. That’s tough to do. But if you can have 6 ‘top 4’ defensemen, that’s the best way to be hard to play against without having doughty, Weber, Keith or ekblad etc. Roman Polak was never a top 4 and shown now he’s not a top 6 anymore. Rielly, gardiner, zaitsev, Miller, and then carrick, borgman, dermott, maybe the Russian kid that’s buddies with zaitsev that they’re signing is a top 4 guy right away like zaitsev was. I think that might be the way the leafs have to do it because #1 Dmen aren’t out there. How many have been traded in their prime in the last 10-15 years? Subban ans Weber, but they were traded for each other lol had to have one to get one.

Makes no sense for either Team.
The Leafs have depth in the AHL and Draft Picks if they choose. Like Mangement said to make a Trade like that you weaken a spot to get better in another. If the Leafs make a Trade for a Top 4 DMan it will be something like. CCarrick, Kapanen, ANielsen and a Draft Pick not JVR.

Why would you rather trade 4 young pieces that are controllable and can/ will be part of the future for the same thing you can get for one piece that has a very slim chance of being back anyway? Depth is an asset because you have options to fill a spot when A player like JVR leaves, why give that away?
