HYPOTHETICAL

But let's say in this scenario, that the Golden Knights are actually in a playoff spot near Winter-Ish. Would this be a suitable trade to retain that position?

VGK - Matt Duchene, Joe Colborne, Chris Butler and Conditional 2019 4th Round Draft Pick (Becomes 3rd if Vegas makes playoffs)

COL - Vadim Shipachov, Shea Theodore, Griffin Reinhardt and 2018 1st Round Draft Pick

MTL - Jon Merrill and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare

VGK - Brandon Davidson and Andrew Shaw

Reasonings:

COL - They need to trade Duchene, he isn't happy and simply doesn't want to a part of Colorado anymore. As for the return, Shipachov could get an easy top 6 role with Colorado, as for Theodore and Reinhardt could easily make the weak defence that Colorado has. As for giving up purposes, they could easily say bye to Butler (used for VGK's 7th D) and Colborne who struggled at camp and is in AHL

MTL - They simply need to improve somewhere to get the team off the ground, getting a bonified defender in Merril maybe could help out Montreal, also a Frenchman in Bellemare could easily be beneficial for the bottom 6. For the return Shaw could be expendable due to forward depth, same with Davidson for D depth

VGK - Shipachov is simply too good for AHL, unless McPhee and Gallant come to see that, most suitable option would be that they have to trade him. Duchene would be that one part of the offence that could easily gel with Neal on the first line and bring the team to the playoffs, if that is what they are going for. Colborne could easily make the team as a depth scorer and Butler (for giving up Theodore and Reinhardt) is a perfect 7th or 8th defender. Giving up Reinhardt is a no brainer, he needs a fresh start and if he won't play with Vegas he can get that somewhere else, but with Brannstrom coming up that makes Theodore some-what expendable, and for the return should be enough to give him up. As for giving up Merril and Bellemare. Vegas simply has too much bottom 6 forwards, and defenders as a whole. Sending Davidson to the minors would probably be best to takeover Theodore's spot, but Shaw could make an impact in the bottom 6, or possibly middle 6.

Theodore and their first will NOT be traded this year. They are building for the future.

Even if they're in a playoff position, highly doubt they sacrifice young assets (Theodore, 1st) for a highly unlikely Cup run. Would be dumb, tbh.

I agree with both above. McPhee isn't dumb. Not going to believe this team is for real. They've been impressive in a small sample size however he will not trade prospects and picks. Goes completely against what he has said for the last year.

Also usually a conditional pick gets downgraded if the team receiving the pick reaches their goal with the added players. Not sure why Colorado would have to pay a 3rd instead of a 4th if the players they give Vegas helps them into the playoffs. should be a 3rd becomes a 4th. either way, not going to happen.

McPhee is dumb or at least he use to be. Clearly learned from his mistake of trading Forsberg for Erat. But I honestly don't see the Vegas making a lot of moves unless it is around moving out a dman.
