To TOR:
Brett Pesce
2017 2nd Round Pick

To CAR:
James Van Riemsdyk
Roman Polak

With this trade, Toronto gets that big, right-handed d-man who fits in with their young player core as well as a 2nd round pick to bolster their prospect pool some more. Carolina is currently a middle of the pack team in terms of offense and so, adding in a player like JVR can be really helpful to them. This also allows Toronto to give another one of their forward prospects a chance to develop in the NHL and get accustomed early on.

Also, Carolina has a plethora of defensemen and so, trading one to help the offense is not a bad idea. Roman Polak basically serves as a filler in the deal and can either play a top 6 role or be an injury replacement player for them.

Thoughts?

Carolina laughs at this Pesce is more valuable to them right now than JVR and a mid-2nd is worth more to them than Polak. Not close.

I'm not a leaf fan but If I was I would rather see more established defenseman like Vatanen in return for JVR. Pesce is good but Toronto has a young D core Wich is fine but bringing a guy that's still you (Vatanen) but already has couple season behind him could be beneficial beside a guy like Reilly. Just my opinion, but not a bad trade.
